Adventure Weekend in London

Come Friday 5 o'clock and another weekend packed with exciting new adventures shall start off for me today :)

Exploring the whereabouts of JACK THE RIPPER ... from the CITY of LONDON our professional guide leads us through ALDGATE into the east end, along tight little alleyways, past traditional pubs and all the way to Spitalfields Market by night!! 

On Saturday is London OPEN HOUSE, which means that more than 800 buildings are waiting for the citizen's visits :)

Together with a nice acquaintance back from my time at uni in Bath I get into the queue for the Lloyds Building!

It is so worth the wait - we learn about the history of one of the world's most famous trading floors! 

Founded in 1765, Lloyds specialised in insuring ships and their cargo. Until today, Lloyds insurance knowledge and willingness to take on risk when others do not, is appreciated by brokers and others in the finance industry...

Next stop is the GUILDHALL of the City of London (the one squaremile that constitutes the origin of what we consider as London nowadays). 

 A magic labyrinth that stretches even into an underground hall system and an ancient Amphitheatre constructed by the Romans. 

Sunny Sunday is welcomed with a Brunch and Morning Cocktail, then I am heading up high above the city into the wonderfully Mediterranean flair of KENSINGTON ROOF GARDENS. 

My friend Martha is stopping over for a few nights on her way to Marrakesh and since I haven't seen her in almost a year, there's a lot to catch up on :)

Highgate Cemetery in northern London

A Saturday in London, good weather with clouds moving fast as is so typical for here, the slightly colder wind is announcing the arrival of autumn... 

...Katha and I have explored a tremendous amount of places in the UK's capital throughout the last months and so we decided to head for northern London today. 

In the 19th century, when the Industrial Revolution allured more and more people to London, poor hygienic standards let to an outbreak of Cholera with thousands of people dead and not enough space on the city's graveyards. 

This is when the 7 magnificent cemeteries - Highgate amongst them - were built and run by a private company.

The Egyptian Alley leads to the Lebanon Circle with a Cedar tree on top. The doors are entrances to family graves. 

Victorians loved to show off how wealthy they were and the bigger and higher a grave, the more money they had. Even professional mourners were employed to have a particularly big funeral!

 Probably the most famous person buried in Highgate Cemetery is Karl Marx...

Holly Village and its 12 beautiful gothic cottages...

Highgate Cemetery, Parliament Hills and descending from Hampstead Heath into Camden Town where we enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner ... it was a wonderful day trip!

Viele Wiedersehen in BERLIN

Endlich - nach 3 Jahren bin ich mal wieder ein paar entspannte Tage in meinem geliebten Berlin unterwegs. Ich übernachte bei meiner Freundin Friederike - in Friedrichshain im Osten von Berlin - und weil es ein Wiedersehen nach nunmehr 2 Jahren ist natürlich besonders schön ... noch viele mehr werden in den nächsten Tagen folgen :)

Am ersten Tag treffe ich mich mit Sven zum Mittagessen - er hat mich die ersten paar Tage in Berlin damals bei sich daheim untergebracht. Es ist grossartig, ihn nach so langer Zeit weiterzusehen und zu hören, was sich in der Zwischenzeit alles so getan und und was seine Pläne für die Zukunft sind :)

Am Nachmittag gibt's ein lang erwartetes Wiedersehen mit Nelson - vor 5 Jahren haben wir uns in Taipei getroffen und nun hier in Berlin! Mit dabei hat Nelson ein Geschenk von unserem gemeinsamen Freund Jerry ... ein traditionell Taiwanesischen Stoff mit dem ich mir mein eigenes kreatives Stück zaubern kann ... mal sehen :)

Am zweiten Tag begebe ich mich nach Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen. Dort hat die "Staatssicherheit Stasi" der ehemaligen DDR ihre Opfer gefangen gehalten, verhört, psychisch zerstört und ihnen den Prozess gemacht in dem nur die Stasi gewinnen konnte. 

Wahnsinnig interessant, erschreckend und sehr zu empfehlen vor allem weil (Zeit-)Zeugen mit direktem Bezug die etwa 2-stündigen Führungen durchführen ... eine sehr wichtige Erfahrung für mich! 

Abends treffe ich mich mit zwei ehemaligen Kommilitonen an der Spree ...

...und am nächsten Tag geht's ab zur Messe, der eigentliche Grund meines Berlin-Aufenthalt - ich organisiere den Satzuma Stand meiner Firma auf der IFA Messe und meine beiden Kollegen David und Tito reisen an.  

Erstmal haben wir uns einen Cocktail verdient ... oder zwei ... ;))

Ausgezeichnete deutsche Küche wird mich noch die nächsten sieben Tage verwöhnen :)
