New Year = New Adventures :)

Another year is coming to its end and a new one lies ahead. Although our calendars (Gregorian, Julian, Mayan or whichever) find their end (eg on December 31st or maybe a couple of weeks later), our lives are going to continue.

New challenges lie ahead, new experiences,
new acquaintanceships and new love affairs!

I am very much looking forward to an exciting 2013, 

dancing into the new year once again in London and heading off to TANZANIA on January 1st,

hopping over DUBAI and into Eastern Africa *yipppie*

Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can on it.

Sieben Wochen Heimaturlaub…

…und die Zeit ist nur so verflogen:

• auf der supertoll gelungenen Überraschungs-Willkommensparty von meinen Brüdern und Papa organisiert mit Familie, Freunden und Nachbarn um alle unsere Erfolge zu feiern:  11. Schuljahr, Matura und Masterstudium *DANKESCHÖN*
• während meiner Wien-Woche als ich einige liebe Freunde besuchte, im Musical war, bei Sonnenschein über den Naschmarkt bummelte, Schloss Schönbrunn besichtigte, dem österreichischen Bundespräsident in der Hofburg die Hand schüttelte, bei einer Case Study Challenge mitmachte und die Wiener Kaffeehauskultur genoss.
• bei einer Wanderung aufs Madereck und als ich mein Tanzbein am Gruenen Ball schwang
• beim selbsterlegten Martinigansl braten
• in der Asia Spa Sauna- und Entspannungswelt
• im steirischen Oberland bei meinen Großeltern
• beim Kekserl backen, Adventkranz binden und Bratapfel zubereiten
• in Graz auf ein kurzes tête à tête mit Freunden
• während der wöchentlichen Massage *Danke Mama, welch großartiges Geschenk*
• am Glühweinstandl
• während meiner „Familien-Masterfeier“ bei einem leckeren Essen *herzlichen Dank für die kostbaren Geschenke, ihr Lieben*

Meine Masterarbeit wurde mit EXZELLENT beurteilt und die Sponsion nächste Woche bildet den offiziellen und krönenden Abschluss meines Studiums!!!

Nun, eine Frage drängt sich jetzt natürlich auf: WIE GEHT’S WEITER?

Tjaaa … ich kann die Fragezeichen über meinem Kopf schweben sehen. 

Dennoch - die vielen verschiedenen Ideen, Wünsche und Träume glitzern nur so um die Wette! ;-)

Über originelle „Angebote“ freu ich mich aber trotzdem sehr! Falls also jemand was weiß, nur her damit *g*

Wer’s noch nicht bemerkt hat: ich bin flexibel, zielstrebig, begeisterungsfähig, selbstständig, wissensdurstig, aktiv, anpassungsfähig und kommunikativ :-)

Jetzt gerade sitz ich im Zug übern Semmering, es schneit leicht und ich genieß die schöne Landschaft. Schon in ein paar Stunden lande ich wieder in London. Nächste Woche starte ich voll motiviert durch mit „jobhunting“ und bin schon gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen, was ich im nächsten Jahr mach – im Jänner – in 23 Tagen – in 552 Stunden in 33.xxx Minuten …

In October, my mum came to visit me in the UK *yippie* After sightseeing in London we went to beautiful Bath and then we rented a car to go down to georgeous Cornwall!!!

Starting in the southwest corner of the island, we went to St. Michael's Mount:

On the next day we saw Land's End and walked part of the stunningly beautiful coast path...

Via St. Ives we went up all the west coast and after a week of travelling back to Bath :)

Masterdissertation done

Juhuuu - es ist soweit: vergangene Woche hab ich meine Dissertation eingereicht! Unglaublich, wie schnell die Zeit verging. Mir kommt vor, ich hab grad erst wieder zu studieren begonnen und nun ist das Ziel, auf das ich die letzten zwei Jahre (oder eigentlich viel laenger :) hingearbeitet habe erreicht. 

Von heute auf morgen quasi. Bis zur letzten Minute habe ich geschrieben ... und dann beschlossen, es reicht jetzt und ich drucke mein Werk aus und binde es zu einem Buch. 

Es geht um "Bolsa Familia". Das ist Brasilien's "Familienstipendium". Beduerftige Familien erhalten monatliche Bargeldzahlungen unter der Bedingung, dass sie ihre Kinder zur Schule schicken anstatt zur Arbeit und Arzt- bzw. Impftermine muessen wahrgenommen werden. 

Nun, Bolsa Familia gibt es seit zehn Jahren, Vorgaengerprogramme wurden bereits in den 90ern eingefuehrt. In Brasilien, ist die Armut immer noch enorm hoch und das Land zaehlt zu den "sozial ungleichsten" weltweit. Warum also, konnte Bolsa Familia keinen nachhaltigen Effekt erzielen?

Ich bin zum Schluss gekommen, dass es NOCH keinen langfristigen Effekt gibt weil sich Armut ja nicht von einem auf den andern Tag abschaffen laesst. Brasilien ist ein riesiges Land und die Bedingungen sind in jedem Bundesstaat anders. Neben den knapp 200mio Einwohnern sind auch der geschichtliche sowie kulturelle Hintergrund Brasiliens und das enorme Ausmaß der Korruption Gruende fuer das nur langsame Voranschreiten auf dem Weg aus der Armut. Der Staat muss unterstuetzend mit einer gscheiten Ausbildung fuer ALLE aufkommen, Arbeitsplaetze und qualitativ hochwertige Sozialleistungen schaffen.

Mir ist dieses Thema last minute "zugeflogen". Waehrend ich bei unsren Tabakbauern am Feld war, haben wir uns über die Probleme der Bolsa Família unterhalten und ploetzlich hatte ich meine Dissertation vor Augen. Ein perfektes Thema. Ich kannte die Theorie bereits von meiner frueheren Arbeit für die non-profit Organisation ICEP in Wien, hatte die Praxis hier in Bahia vor mir, stellte meine Hypothese auf und konnte alles akademisch "beweisen" indem ich Feldforschung im Recôncavo Baiano durchfuehrte!
Und so war ich unterwegs - besuchte beduerftige Familien, unterhielt mich mit Aerzten und Lehrern, war im Unterricht von Grund- und Hauptschulen anwesend und durfte sogar in eine Vorlesung einer Privatuni. Ich sprach mit Beamten der diversen Ministerien Bahia's und interviewte eine Menge Leute.
Ein wahnsinnig interessantes Thema und nach ausgiebiger Materialsammlung war ich dann in England, um alles niederzuschreiben ... in vier Wochen.
Die meisten schauten mich stirnrunzelnd und etwas bemitleidenswert an, als ich ihnen das erzaehlte. Ja stimmt, es war nicht viel Zeit. Aber ich hab sie mir sehr gut eingeteilt und konnte alles gut fertigbringen. Klar, wenn ich mehr Zeit gehabt haette, waere alles sicherlich noch besser strukturiert gewesen und ueberhaupt ... aber naja, ich bin auf alle Faelle bereit, meine Masterdissertation zu verteidigen :))

Ueberhaupt dachte ich zum ersten Mal daran, dass ich eigentlich schon sehr stolz sein kann auf mich und das was ich in den letzten Jahren waehrend meiner Studienzeit erleben durfte und erreichen konnte. 
Denk immer daran ... nach den Sternen zu greifen!!!

London 8:00am - rays of sunshine are waking me up … what a beautiful start into the day!

My train ride leads me through the lovely green landscape straight to Bath. Oh wow – I totally forgot how beautiful this town is!! This must for sure be the quaintest old little town in England. Three of my colleagues are still in Funky Backpackers Hostel Bath and this is where I gonna be for one month now. The stuff crowd is a sympathetic team of Aussies, Finnish, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian and German. 

 

On my first day I arrange some things and am just overwhelmed by the amazing service culture of the British!! Yes, now I can feel the (positive) culture shock: people actually give answers, know what they’re talking about and even give some super-helpful extra information *overwhelmed*

The free National Health Care Center is clean, quiet and fast – when I leave I should evaluate them … *incredible*

Another highlight of my day is spotting Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones in Bath!!
 

Guess what: we’re out for drinks from 3:30pm … doesn’t matter I told 'em I’m there to write my Master dissertation *hahaha* Can’t withstand the seduction of cider, cheesy chips and raspberry sambucca shots ;-)

We enter the first location of our pub crawl – I truly feel like back in time: this is sooo british here!!

After the big São João festivities when my friend Dani left, I had the pleasure to spend two more weeks with Andres, an utmost creative person with who i enjoyed some great reflection-talks ...

... Andres, I'm very grateful I have a new word in my vocabulary CLUSTERF*** ;-))

July was pretty busy - I finished my projects in São Félix, said good bye to my friends in Salvador, visited beautiful Chapada Diamantina Nationalpark a last time and got ready for surprising my sweetheart in Southern Brazil :)

After travelling the country for four weeks, I went back in the Recôncavo and there I did field research to write my MA-dissertation.

Pau made delicious MOCOFATO com PIRÃO for me in my last night w/ my colleagues!

Looking forward to go back to good old Europe, I am - at the same time - sad to leave back my magic Bahia: the warm-hearted people, the delicious food, fresh fruits and lovely summer climate all year round. I will miss riding my bike through the lush green landsacpe, sipping Caipirinha while watching the sunset at the beaches of the Atlantic ocean and swimming in the green water of my favourite lagoon and its white sand dunes.

Seven months full of new, eye-opening experiences lay behind me, colourful days, crazy nights ... thank you all, for being part of it!!

Right now I'm somewhere in the sky, flying via France directly over Paris ... yessss, I did see Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysee from above ... and Luxembourg into Frankfurt. Everybody who has resided on another continent for seven months, probably knows what I mean: the weirdest thing right now is to look down on the old continent and its geography...

São Paulo is a huge city but also a state in Brazil ...

So, we visited some nice places and of course couldn't leave before assisting a FOOTBALL match in Morumbi stadium, eating delicious RODIZIO till we burst and spending a night in Brazilian couple's most popular type of location ... all day - all night ... ;))

PANTANAL in Mato Grosso do Sul

After travelling by car some12 hours, we finally arrive in tiny Douradina. 5.000 people live there and on the first day, everybody knows we're here. This region's main industry is soy and sugar cane production ... a totally different world compared to Bahia.

My biggst adventure there was for sure when five dogs were chasing me and thought they would like to try Mika's feet for breakfast!!
Well, Mika continued jogging and straight to a doctor who gave her two anti-rabies inoculation = injections against raiva humana or Tollwut in German!


Apart from that, no big events … oh, except the family reunion *hihihi*. I’ve met some 50 people or more all somehow related to each other: aunts and uncles, cousins, nephews, brothers and sisters in law and in blood ;) – chit-chatted, assured seven times that my blond hair is natural and ate granny’s delicious “pirão” that she prepared with lotsa love for a whole day :-)

... sometime in between, we went to the PANTANAL's grasslands for a few days
