The accolade is designed to recognise a university’s all-round excellence, encompassing a range of aspects of research, teaching, employability and the student experience.
The formal announcement of the award was made in The Sunday Times University Guide,  published in the paper on Sunday 11 September, 2011. In its 14th year of publication and with a readership of three million, the guide provides both a British university league table as well as profiles of all the UK’s higher education institutions.

In that league table the University of Bath has risen to 5th out of 122 UK universities and colleges – its highest ever position.
Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “This is a prestigious honour and a fantastic achievement for Bath. “It reflects the enthusiasm and commitment of the entire University community, both our staff and students, and is something we can all take great pride in. We have always been committed to the pursuit of excellence in our research, teaching and learning and so it is particularly pleasing to have this recognised and rewarded at a national level."
“We attract real academic high-flyers to the University, with nearly 75 per cent of our entrants coming with grades of at least AAB or equivalent, reinforcing our position in the top rank of UK universities.”
Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times University Guide, said: “Bath is a thoroughly deserving winner of our University of the Year award for 2011/12. It provides a high-quality, distinctive university experience that is valued by students and employers alike. Ranking fifth in our university league table is no mean feat and is confirmation of the teaching and research excellence that takes place there. The country depends on the success of universities like Bath, not just because of its innovative, relevant research, but also because of the intelligent, passionate and work-ready graduates it turns out each year. They will be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow and they are ultimately the university’s best advertisement.”

The guide’s league table is compiled using a number of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, dropout rates and graduate employment levels. The weighting given to measures of graduate employability was doubled this year – a particular strength of the University of Bath.
