Touch base ... hello AUSTRIA :-)

first BILINGUAL edition - erste ZWEISPRACHIGE Ausgabe

good morning, good evening and HELLO EVERYBODY  -wherever you are on this planet:-)

It's been a loooong looong time since I wrote my blog the last time.
That is for one, b/c it has been rather busy - happy to be back at home, catch up with family and friends, had some doctor's appointment just general checks after 8 months in tropical zones and losing hundreds of hairs on my head every day ;-) , visiting my former university colleagues in Krems, meeting my friends from Ecuador in Vienna *gracias por ese día tan chèvere*  looking for a job, apply for university (yess, I wanna do a Master's program) and of course - sometimes just being lazy and doing nothing at all was awesome!!

I do not even know where to start with writing now but, let's try....

Friday February 19th, 2010: I fly ~45minutes eastwards to Singapore in order to meet my mum at the airport. She came to Asia to visit me together with her two friends Helga (my godmother) and Margit! I pick them up and the adventure starts - we spend 2 weeks in SouthEast Asia's most bustling metropolises!

For the weekend we are in Singapore and although I've been there twice before, I experience this city in a new way now :-)  ....still, it reminds me more of  a city like Miami in Florida than an Asian one - everything is sooo developed, organized, clean - gosh, I am not even used to that any more ;-))
My friend Nic meets us and we go for delicous Hot Pot lunch, enjoy a great view of the skyline from the highway, visit Chinatown and Little India and stroll around in the beautiful green jungle parks in the middle of Singapore!

Monday, February 22nd, 2010: My last 4 days at work - Austrian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur
My guests take the "hop on - hop off" bus to get a first overview of the city and also enjoy the view from KL's television tower on BukitNanas hill. In the evening we go up to the amazing SKYBAR with view to the Petronas Twin Towers!! We get there around 7 o'clock so that we can see the sunrise and how the towers look during the day as well as at night.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010:
Today, Mum Helga and Margit visit the nice Bird Park, Butterfly Park and Orchid Gardens in KL's recreation area number one - the Lake Gardens! In the evening we meet my friend Isaac who shows us around at a traditional Malay market with lotsa Malay, Indian and Chinese food :-) *we love it* Thank you very much Isaac!!

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010: Melaka and - of course, quiz night in ChangkatBukitBintang
The ladies take a 2-hours bus ride to Melaka at the Strait of Melaka and meet my friend KAM who is showing them around in the city where he is living for !7! hours !! Thank you sooo much Kam, you showed them everything and the really enjoyed this wonderful day w/ UUU :-)))

Melaka has always been an important trading point - with its harbour, strategically located in the Strait of Melaka is was first colonized by the Portuguese, later by the Dutch and finally by the British before Malaysia became independent in 1957.

Thursday, February February 25th, 2010: Putrajaya
Mum, Helga and Margit visit Putrajaya - the intelligent garden city - today. It is an artificially created town where all the ministeries and various departments such as for immigration, security, etc. are situated. The busride turns out to be a horror trip with two drivers who take it in turns as one is more incapable than the other!! Completely drunk and for sure w/ some drugs in the blood the try to stay on the road somehow ... but do not really care about pedestrians.
"Breaks - what is this?? We have a horn, this is enough!"
For sure an experience the ladies will keep in mind as one of the craziest busrides in their life *hihihi* Welcome to Asia!

Friday, February 26th, 2010: Kuala Lumpur - Langkawi Island
Today we enjoy a last day in Kuala Lumpur - walk around between the skyscrapers in the so calle "Golden Triangle" where many banks, businesses, restaurants, bars and entertainment is located. In the afternoon we take a cab to the airport - and are already sitting comfortably in the taxi when the rain starts to pour down on Kuala Lumpur ...yeah I know, the sky is crying that I am leaving ;-((

Langkawi is an island on Malaysia's west coast, near Thailand. We stay in a wonderful resort Awana Porto Malay ... can you see something in this name??
Yep, I managed to book the probably only hotel on the island that is ON THE WATER bus has NO BEACH !!  *aaargh, congrats Michaela*

Nevertheless we had an awesome time on Langkawi - walk along the white sandy beach, swim in turquoise water, relax at the pool, sipping some cocktails on the terrace directly at the water, do some island hopping, play with the funny monkeys, observe some sea eagles, discover the mangroves guided by the Austrian Peter Höfinger, who moved to the island more than 10 years ago - an expert in Langkawi's nature http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYcjoeeOGNk - have a look at this if you wanna more about the expansion of mangrove forests!!!

*what a wonderful time*

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010: Bangkok
Today we leave Malaysia and fly to the megacity of BANGKOK - capital of the Kingdom of Thailand. It is a time of  revolt, the so called "red shirts" (supporters of  Thaksin, the former prime minister who was removed by a coup b/c he had misapplied money, etc.)  are upset with a recent court decision against Thaksin. I am in contact with the embassy in Bangkok and also talk to the local tourist office - bot assure me: no need to worry, it's okey for tourist to be in the city :-)

After checking in at our beautiful hostel (Mum and I have the love room *hihi*) we start our discovery tour through old Bangkok - and it's only now that I understand why it's called the Venice of SouthEastAsia ...

We also take a boat along Chao Praya River and this turns out to be a real adventure: all of a sudden the captain jumps off the boat and tries to anchor from the footbridge ... the motor is broken and so we all need to get off the boat - as we are in Thailand and do not understand the local lingo Thai it takes a while until we find out what happend ;-)   ... well, we wait for the next boat and enjoy a boat ride with double the number of people that is legally allowed on board - this is Thailand - we are not in Europe were safety standards are top priority *hihi*

It's getting evening we enter one of these huuuuge shopping malls, take a rest in Lumphini Park and buy some nice souveniers at a night market :))
The real adventure of the day is still to come: of course - TúkTuk ride!!! My mum is almost having a heart attack when the four of us get on this fragile vehicle, which is made for two persons, and I sit on the outermost edge .... almost falling out of the TúkTuk at every curve - sure, the driver get's a kick out of it and roaring of laughter as the three ladies freak out ;-)))

Our second day in Bagkok we start with the visit of the Golden Mount, a buddhist monument from where we enjoy a great view. Additionally we pay a vistit to the National Arts Museum - interesting!
To end our wonderful vacation in Asia we go to the tourist-mekka itself: Khao San Road
and enjoy pedicure, massage, delicious Thai food, fresh mango, sweet pancakes, cheap clothes, ... and if you have been to Bangkok before, you know:
SAME SAME, BUT DIFFERNT :-))))

Breathtaking TúkTuk ride ;-)

Can't belive that I was in Asia for exactly half a year now - time was indeed flying and still in terms of experiences it's like I've been away for years. I love this feeling of having learnt something new every single day, these "AHA" effects where all of a sudden it makes "blopp" and you understand so much more, see it clearly in front of you!!

Adapting to a clompletely differnt culture is just awesome (most of the time;-)  - and when I say adapt, I mean adapt: eating with fingers or chopsticks - depending on where you are, washing ur body with just a bowl of cold water, accepting the non-existance of toilet paper, abstaining from brown bread (this is one of the most difficult things for all Austrians I know), having rice every single day and eating other real weird stuff - oh, it's of course not weird it's just that Westerner's are not used to it ;-) , boxing into the door as you want to use the gearshift of a car that is driven on the left side of the street - so, also the gearshift is on the other side, of course :-), inventing stories so that nobody loses face, be smiling all the time although you are sooo pissed b/c again and again they are selling you stuff for skyrocketing prices ... all white people have money?!

...and all these other small things I got used to so quick and easy that I do not even think about it anymore - it's just weird now not to turn around any more to see if a bagsnatcher is stopping next to me to grab my valuables, to have hot showers 24/7, not to be able to eat great food in the middle of the night, not to find shops open at 3 o'clok in the night, not to sweat constantly or acutally the fact that it's cold outside and warm inside -as this is exactly vice-versa in eg Malaysia ;-), not to bargain for a price but simply accept these high prices - food is about 4 times the price here, what the heck ???!!

Another song I came across during my trip in Asia - more exactly on a small island  - yesss, one of these paradize islands where you just think: One day I will go there and never ever leave again but be happy and enjoy the sunshine!!
...any comments welcome :-)

To end with, I want to reapeat what I've stated so often already:

JUST DO IT - YESSS YOU CAN!!!

A good friend of mine left a note for me last year before leaving:

"The first person you get to know on a journey is YOURSELF"
*thank you*
